The rehabilitation of myth: Vico's New science.Joseph Mali - 1992 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
In this important essay, Joseph Mali argues that Vico's New Science must be interpreted according to Vico's own clues and rules of interpretation, principally his claim that the 'master-key' of his New Science is the discovery of myth. Following this lead Mali shows how Vico came to forge his new scientific theories about the mythopoeic constitution of consciousness, society, and history by reappraising, or 'rehabilitating' the ancient and primitive mythical traditions which still persist in modern times. He further (...)

Hanging the coat on a collar: Same function but different localization and mechanism for COPII.Yehonathan Malis, Koret Hirschberg & Christoph Kaether - 2022 - Bioessays 44 (10):2200064.
An entirely different mechanism and localization were recently proposed for the COPII coat complex, challenging its well‐accepted function to select and concentrate cargo into small COPII‐coated spherical transport vesicles. Instead, the COPII complex is suggested to form a dynamic yet stationary collar that forms a boundary between the ER and the ER export membrane domain. This membrane domain, the ER exit site (ERES), is the site of COPII‐mediated sorting and concentration of transport competent proteins. Subsequently, the ERES is implicated to (...)

Five groundbreaking moments in Heidegger's thinking.Kenneth Maly - 2020 - London: University of Toronto Press.
Five Groundbreaking Moments in Heidegger's Thinking presents a fresh interpretation of some of Heidegger's most difficult but important works, including his early Beiträge (Contributions) and engages with his theoretical concept of "the reading in thinking." In new translations of central texts, Kenneth Maly invites the reader to think along the way by reading, contemplating, and translating Heidegger's ideas into context. An introduction to the field of philosophy and more specifically to Heidegger's thought, Five Groundbreaking Moments in Heidegger's Thinking asks the (...)

The Reconciliation of Myth: Benjamin's Homage to Bachofen.Joseph Mali - 1999 - Journal of the History of Ideas 60 (1):165-187.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Reconciliation of Myth: Benjamin’s Homage to BachofenJoseph MaliIn the “Tiergarten,” the first chapter of his autobiographical work, Berlin Childhood Around Nineteen-Hundred, Benjamin recalls how, as a child, he experienced the paths, monuments, and people of the park as a “labyrinth” replete with all kinds of mythological figures. Entering the park like a second Theseus following his Ariadne along the thread of erotic sensations, he discovered therein the myth-realm (...)

(1 other version)Economic and equity implications of land-use zoning in suburban agriculture.Adesoji Adelaja, Donn Derr & Karen Rose-Tank - 1989 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 2 (2):97-112.
A cash-flow viability model is used to evaluate the impacts of land-use zoning on farm households in New Jersey. Findings suggest that zoning results in increased production expenses, lower efficiency and profitability, and the devaluation of land assets. Cash flow and economic viability are, thus, reduced. Impacts of zoning on farm incomes, off-farm incomes, revenues from land sales, indebtedness, and farm sizes were not statistically significant. The results suggest that the use of land-use zoning statutes to guarantee the existence of (...)

Research note on equity and ethics in state-promotion of agricultural products.Adesoji O. Adelaja & Robin G. Brumfield - 1991 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 4 (1):82-88.
Many state governments in the United States promote locally-produced farm products. This paper discusses issues related to the ethics and equity of such promotional programs. The paper argues that generic promotion is generally easier to justify in terms of ethics and equity than brand promotion. It also argues that informative and factual brand promotions are easier to justify than deceptive and persuasive brand promotions. Additional equity issues arising when taxpayers finance state-promotional programs are also discussed.

A remark on pseudo proof systems and hard instances of the satisfiability problem.Jan Maly & Moritz Müller - 2018 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 64 (6):418-428.
We link two concepts from the literature, namely hard sequences for the satisfiability problem sat and so‐called pseudo proof systems proposed for study by Krajíček. Pseudo proof systems are elements of a particular nonstandard model constructed by forcing with random variables. We show that the existence of mad pseudo proof systems is equivalent to the existence of a randomized polynomial time procedure with a highly restrictive use of randomness which produces satisfiable formulas whose satisfying assignments are probably hard to find.

A refreshing and rethinking retrieval of Greek thinking.Kenneth Maly - 2024 - London: University of Toronto Press.
A Refreshing and Rethinking Retrieval of Greek Thinking presents a rereading and rethinking of Greek philosophy in an attempt to retrieve an essential thread in Greek thinking that has been covered over for many centuries--beginning with the late Greeks, then Christianity, and then rationalism from the seventeenth century onward--and misrepresented by mistranslations in the nineteenth century. Using Heidegger's work with Greek thinking as a springboard, the book shows how the covering over of this essential thread happened. Kenneth Maly provides a (...)

If Being and Time is perceived as undermining modern metaphysics, Contributions undertakes to reshape the very project of thinking.

The aim of the article is to point out the problem that started in the 2018 US Open final between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams. During this final match, there was a conflict between the player S. Williams and the chair umpire C. Ramos, which involved a violation of rules related to coaching during the match. Subsequently, C. Ramos was banned from officiating the Williams sisters' matches at the next 2019 US Open. The authors of the article believe that the (...)

The ArgumentScience consists in progress by innovation. Scientists, however, are committed to all kinds of traditions that persist or recur in society regardless of intellectual and institutional changes. Merton's thesis about the origins of the scientific revolution in seventeenth-century England offers a sociohistorical confirmation of this revisionist view: the emergence of a highly rational scientific method out of the religious-ethical sentiments of the English Puritans implies that scientific knowledge does indeed grow out of – and not really against – customary (...)

    # BlackGirlMagic as Resistant Imaginary.Qrescent Mali Mason - 2021 - Hypatia 36 (4):706-724.
This article concerns itself with the ways that Black women have taken up #BlackGirlMagic as a critical reimagining of their subject positionalities as Black women. I argue that #BlackGirlMagic is a resistant imaginary that has significantly altered the contemporary western social imaginary and suggest that the intersectional ambiguity that Black women animate builds community among Black women toward collective liberation. Bringing together Kimberlé Crenshaw's concept of intersectionality, Simone de Beauvoir's concept of ambiguity, and María Lugones's concept of oppressed←→resisting subjects, I (...)
